Can You Work From Home?

Working from home seems like an attractive proposition to a lot of people. Everybody thinks of it as having more freedom for the things you want to do and improving the quality of your life. Being independent with your work means that you either have a business from home or you freelance as a professional. If you are someone who works for himself or herself but wants to work from home as well, you need to evaluate certain matters. The truth is that working from home requires additional motivation. You need to be more versatile and better organized. You need to be prepared to be the solution finder for all matters and sundry that crop up in your business. Consider the following before you consider working from home:

Are you ready to “ Do it Yourself”?

Working for a company mostly has you working with an infrastructural support. You have other people in the office who have separate functions that complement your duties. You have delegation of labor where you can assign several tasks to others. Working from home will most likely mean you handling many of these talks yourself. Unless, of course, you are starting out with a fair investment in infrastructure. You have the option of starting out with additional space and additional employees. You may also outsource your work to companies or freelance professionals for lobs such as marketing, accounting and bookkeeping etc.

Are you disciplined and organized?

You may find it hard to get many things accomplished without the presence of the daily working schedule that working in an office job imposes on you. Working in an office forces you to have a schedule. Being supervised with your supervisors and having to meet goals and deadlines keeps you disciplined and focused. Working from home, you will have to muster the will power to maintain the same, if not a higher, level of discipline. You will not have others to remind you or to depend on in order to be productive. It is one of the biggest setbacks that people face initially while working from home. They find their productivity lacking.

Making goals for yourself is a good tactic to maintain productivity and functionality. Set weekly and monthly goals and try to meet them. When you find yourself slacking, be ready to give your business extra hours.

Can You Resist The Distractions?

This is a collary to the ability to discipline and organize yourself in your work. working from home alienates you from the office environment which is designed with the sole aim of making the people perform to the best of their abilities and productivity. Instead you get all the distraction that are a part of your life at home. If you have a family it might the kids or friends. It may be house work or errands that need to be run. And just because you are there, you might be expected to do it. You may even feel like them getting them out of the way first. The trick is to make a work routine and stick by it as much as you can. It may seem like the obvious thing, but it is important. Your work hours should be treated like so by your family and friends. Make them understand that you are not to be disturbed while working. It is not all that difficult. After setting the example the first couple of times, they all get the message.
